EDGE to Europa: Ice & Terrain Signal Transfer


Scenario Objective

This scenario exists to evaluate how analytical confidence changes when surface signals are observed with drastically different levels of contextual data availability.

The analyst is tasked with examining Earth-based ice and terrain observations—where rich supporting data exists—and comparing them to analogous surface signals observed on Europa, where contextual data is sparse or absent. The objective is not to determine what is true about Europa, but to assess which types of surface-derived inferences remain analytically defensible when supporting data layers are removed.

This scenario reflects a common real-world analytics context:

  • Analysts must reason about unfamiliar systems using indirect observations
  • Decision-makers rely on analyst judgment when data is incomplete
  • Overconfidence driven by visual similarity is a known failure mode

The learning context is analyst calibration, not scientific discovery.
The output is intended to inform how analysts reason, not what they conclude.

In Scope

  • Comparative analysis of surface signal classes (e.g., fractures, ridges, disrupted terrain)
  • Evaluation of inference robustness under reduced data conditions
  • Explicit articulation of uncertainty and confidence decay
  • Use of Earth data strictly as a calibration reference

Out of Scope

  • Explaining physical mechanisms in detail
  • Validating geological models of Europa
  • Predicting subsurface structure or habitability
  • Introducing new domain theory beyond what affects data interpretation

Data Landscape

Available Data (Earth – Reference World)

  • High-resolution surface imagery of ice-covered terrain
  • Multi-layer observational context (elevation, motion, repeat observations)
  • Derived visual products commonly explored via Earth-observation platforms

These datasets are representative of Earth ice systems curated by organizations such as
National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Available Data (Europa – Transfer Target)

  • Remote imagery of surface ice features
  • Limited topographic inference
  • No direct measurements of subsurface structure
  • No repeat temporal observations at Earth-like resolution

Explicitly Missing Data

  • Ice motion vectors
  • Subsurface radar confirmation
  • Direct thickness or temperature profiles
  • Ground-truth validation

These absences are intentional constraints of the scenario.


Assumed Domain Knowledge

The following domain knowledge is assumed only to the extent that it affects data interpretation:

  • Surface ice can fracture, deform, and reorganize under stress
  • Similar surface patterns can arise from different underlying processes
  • Observational context strongly affects interpretive confidence

No additional domain mastery is required or expected.

Reference links may be provided for context only (e.g., mission briefs, dataset descriptions).
Domain explanations are not part of the analyst’s task.


Key Constraints & Assumptions

Constraints

  • Analysis must rely on observable surface features only
  • No assumption of Earth-like processes on Europa
  • No extrapolation beyond available signal classes

Assumptions

  • Visual similarity can be treated as a candidate signal, not evidence
  • Loss of supporting data layers reduces inference confidence
  • Analyst judgment must explicitly account for uncertainty

Analyst Tasks

The analyst is asked to:

  • Identify surface signal classes observable in both contexts
  • Evaluate which interpretations rely on supporting data unavailable on Europa
  • Distinguish between signal presence and process inference
  • Explicitly state where inference collapses or remains viable

Expected Outputs (Artifacts)

The analyst is expected to produce:

  • Descriptive comparisons of surface signal classes
  • Diagnostic reasoning about inference survivability
  • Assumption and uncertainty registers
  • Confidence statements tied to data availability
  • Visual or tabular evidence artifacts

No “correct conclusion” is expected.


What Would Change This Scenario

This scenario would materially change if:

  • New Europa datasets provide supporting context (e.g., subsurface measurements)
  • Comparable Earth datasets are reduced to imagery-only conditions
  • Analytical objectives shift from inference evaluation to prediction

Any of the above would require scenario revision.
